Remember the case of the birthday bird?

Not a blue macaw on a golden perch

or a budgerigar or zebra finch.

But a pigeon, in fact—a Bleeding Heart Dove.

The one with the seemingly bloodstained chest,

with heartbreak splattered all over its breast.

Meanin’ what? That it’s all sham? That to watch me mope

you’d think I’d been shot, when really I’m right as rain?

Like I’ve got this painted-on ’urt, to make folk think

I’m damaged inside, when really I’m really fine?

It sat in mi garden shed not makin’ a muff,

till I couldn’t cope. I stomped in and bagged it up,

lugged it over to Scapegoat ’ill and shooed it off.

But bugger me sideways! Back at mine it were lodged

on mi windowsill, struttin’ its big, bleedin’ ’eart stuff.

I coaxed it into mi ’ands with Weetabix crumbs.
